Why do you love Manchester United?

I have faced this question many times in my life.
The thing is, it’s like asking your lover, “Why do you love me?”
The answer to this question is never easy because you have no reason. It is an expression, a vow to never leave in ups as well as in downs, accepting all imperfections.
You can like, love, support any club you like or any sport like once…..
King Eric Cantona said, “You can change your wife, change your politics, change your religion. But never can you change your favourite football team!”. In my case it is Manchester United.
So, how come “I was not born in Manchester, but United was born in me!”  ?
I come from a Bengali family, and like it is said in this corner of the world, “football runs through my veins!”. My father is a lifelong East Bengal fan. Let me end this here and go back to the topic in discussion. I was first introduced to the game of football at a tender age of 5, but to say the truth I didn’t understand any bit of it at that time, even though the games gave me immense pleasure. At that time no one in my family gave importance to football beyond India’s own leagues and cups, except for the world cup. The first world cup that I can remember was the 2002 cup final between Brazil and Germany, it was my first exposure to the world football.
One day, most probably at the end of 2002-03 English season, while browsing through the TV channels with an intent to watch cartoons, I came across a football match between Newcastle United and Manchester United. The game ended with a 6-2 victory to Manchester United. I didn’t know the name of the players, league table, etc. But the impact of the game was much more than that. It led to the beginning of this everlasting love story.
The next thing I did was to know about the club and its culture. I had devoted my free time searching for the history, the playing style (The famous 4-4-2), the evolution of the club, despite the fact that internet was not so available and cheap at that time in Siliguri.
Everyone, who watches football, knows the history of the club….
“How a team rose from the humblest of beginnings, reached heights, ploughed depths.”
The Munich air tragedy, flowers of Manchester, Busby babes, Class of 92, Fergie’s Fledglings, The Holy Trinity, passion of the Stretford end, 1999 treble, etc.
The history surrounding the club was not the main reason for this love affair, but one of it for sure.
Before concluding, I would like to summarise the things I have learnt from united. I hope that you will find it motivating enough and implement the same in our life as I have or trying to have….
!. Never give up:-
”It is in the fabric of this football club, it is in the soul of this football club. They never, never give up! And they do it so often that you might think as if it is planned.”
You may lose some times, you may have been frustrated sometimes with the immense failure in your life but you should never fail to try. You should never give up. You must fight till the last minute and your comeback is up for grabs!. :)
Ryan Giggs,”….We never stand still, we always give youth a chance, sometimes we don’t win but we give our all. So, keep supporting us and the good time will come back soon. Thank you!”
2. Life can be cruel but we should overcome that:-
The Munich air disaster is the most terrible incident in the club’s history. 6th February, 1958 claimed 23 lives including Duncan Edwards, Geoff Bent, Roger Byrne, Eddie Colman, Mark Jones, David Pegg, Tommy Taylor, Billy Whelan and injured many, but they, overcoming that, made history and won the European cup in 1968 under the managerial ship of Sir Matt Busby. Yes you read it right! JUST IN 10 YEARS!
So, we should overcome any grievances, not by forgetting it but by using it to motivating ourselves.
3. Dedication brings recognition:-
Sir Alex got recognition and knighthood for his more than 2 decades of dedication to his job i.e. managing the club, which ultimately led to his immense contribution to the world and English football.
Do your job with full dedication and you will get recognition and success for your hard work…
As the adage goes, “Work hard to get what you like or you will be compelled to like what you get.”
To conclude I have only one line to say,
GLORY! GLORY! MAN UNITED!!
